Cognitive behavioral Approaches  

 This workshop includes comprehensive information regarding various aspects of cognitive behavioral approaches and some “hands-on” exercises. Topics are relevant to anyone wanting to become more familiar with the principles and goals common to many program models. It is specifically designed to acquaint non-practitioners with information that will assist in understanding:

Thinking Matters Facilitator Training

Workshop Summary: This cognitive behavioral workshop focuses on teaching participants practical strategies for identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviors. Participants learn about our 5 step model, how thoughts influence emotions and beliefs. Learn how to reframe negative thoughts and problem-solving strategies. The workshop provided a hands-on approach to learning through interactive exercises, group discussions, and role-playing scenarios. Overall, participants gain valuable tools for helping improve their clients mental health and well-being through practical application of cognitive-behavioral techniques.

Advanced Thinking Matters Facilitator Training

 This workshop is designed primarily for trained facilitators of Thinking Matters. It can accommodate a small number of attendees who possess experience in similar models. Participants will practice group management and effective communication using Motivational Engagement and Thinking Matters worksheets.

Core concepts include:

· Cognitive behavioral principles
· Anti-social logic
· Group management
· Effective communication
· Recognizing thinking errors
· Diminishing obstruction tactics
· Advanced group management

Duration: 13 hours over 2 consecutive days

Combined Thinking Matters and Advanced Facilitator Training 

 This workshop is useful for program delivery and supervisory staffs. This combined session familiarizes attendees with basic cognitive behavioral approaches and uses Thinking Matters worksheets to teach facilitation skills. It includes practice facilitation using Thinking Matters second edition materials. Participants will learn how to develop objective situation statements. Participants will practice teaching others to create situation statements that interrupt anti-social logic using Thinking Matters work sheets. Participants use thinking reports to identify risk in anti-social thinking patterns. Participants will learn to identify thinking that reduces the risk of antisocial thinking patterns. Participants will practice group management and effective communication using Thinking Matters worksheets. In addition, participants will practice group management and effective communication using Motivational Engagement in conjunction with Thinking Matters worksheets.

Duration: 18 hours over 3 consecutive days

Thinking Matters Evolution 

This workshop is specific to the Thinking Matters Evolution series of workbooks. Participants are walked through the Thinking Matters Evolution exercises in a group setting. They will practice roles of participant and facilitator while completing exercises they would expect their clients to perform. Each participant is required to perform a lead role in facilitation to gain experience in program delivery. When not taking a lead role they are required to role-play clients. This offers individuals to understand the dynamic nature of self change concepts. This process provides opportunities to internalize program concepts and develop empathy for their clientele. Each participant receives a copy of the Thinking Matters Evolution Facilitator Guide.

Duration: 6 hours over 1 day

Motivational Engagement Training 

The purpose of this session is to help draw attention to specific thinking patterns and provide offenders with reflective feedback that motivates self-curiosity. This is a two-day training that can be used as an interactive technique for group and individual processing of thinking reports, journal entries or other self-change work. Motivational Engagement is a generic and flexible communication technique that can be used in a variety of venues including substance abuse or domestic violence. There are no built in gender biases and therefore can be used with both male and female offenders. Motivational Engagement can be taught to clients, as well as, staff. It is often a useful tool that helps maintain a clear focus upon effective change concepts, reduce group management challenges and reflect risk thinking back to participants.
